Efficient Deck Hand

 

1. Entry Requirements
Candidates must -

a) be at least 17 years of age

b) have worked as a Trainee Rating for at least 12 months

c) have successfully completed the basic training required by

STCW Code A-VI/1

d) hold a navigational watch rating certificate meeting the requirements of

STCW Code A-II/4; and

e) meet the medical fitness requirements (ENG1)

2. All seafarers with designated safety or pollution prevention duties must also successfully complete the following approved basic training, to meet the requirements of STCW Code A-VI/1.2 before being assigned to any shipboard duties

a) personal survival techniques (STCW Code-Table A-VI/1.1)

b) fire prevention and fire fighting (STCW code-table A-VI/1.2)

c) elementary first aid (STCW Code-Table A-VI/1.3); and

d) personal safety and social responsibilities (STCW Code-Table A-VI/1.4)

3. Course Content

a) Meaning of common nautical terms

b) Name and function of various parts and equipment of the ship e.g. deck, bridge, hold, hatch, tank, peaks, DB tanks, ballast tanks, air pipes, bilges, anchors, windlass, winch, derrick

c) Use and care of ropes and wires; splicing of ropes and wire

d) Use of different types of blocks and shackles, bottle screws,bull-dog grips, thimbles, monkey plates

e) Rigging and attendance of pilot ladders and hoists

f) Rigging a bosun's chair and slinging an over side stage

g) Precautions to be taken while working over side or at a height and while entering any enclosed space

h) Identification of commonly used single letter flags

i) Ability to steer a ship on a given course, on a transit or on an instruction from the master or pilot

j) Ability to maintain an efficient lookout

k) Operation of windlass, mooring winch, back spring, slip wire, rope stopper, chain stopper

l) Opening and closing of hatches, rigging up derrick

m) Knots, bends and hitches in common use; whipping of rope ends

n) Securing in anticipation of rough sea

4. Course Length and Fees
5 days, including examination. Please contact us for an up to date fee structure.

5. Qualification
Deck Rating Grade 2

To qualify for this grading, a seafarer must be at least 17 years old and should have -

a) successfully completed the basic training described in section2; and

b) obtained a navigational watch rating certificate after meeting the requirements of STCW Code A-II/4

Deck Rating Grade
To qualify for this grading, a seafarer must be at least 18 years old and should have -

a) met the requirements of deck Rating Grade 2

b) obtained an Ab Certificate; or

c) acquired at least 36 months sea-service, of which at least 12 months has been served in the deck department


AB Certificate
To qualify for the issue of an AB Certificate, a seafarer must -

a) Fully meet the requirement for Deck Rating Grade 1 (including successful completion of EDH or a level 2 Vocational Qualification in Marine Operations)

b) have obtained a Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue boats as required in STCW Code A-VI/2.1; and

c) complete 24 months sea service in the Deck Department or 36 months as a General Purpose rating, a least 12 months of which were on deck duties;

d) have attained the age of 18

An AB certificate may be obtained from any Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) Marine Office on completion of an application form and on production of supporting evidence to confirm that all the conditions above have been met. A prescribed fee will be charged for this service.
