Ancilliary Courses

 

STCW'95 Basic Safety Training
A programme of courses in basic principles of Elementary First Aid, Fire Fighting, Personal Survival Techniques and Personal Safety/Social Responsibilities. A requirement for all Merchant Navy and large Commercial Yacht crew.

Medical First Aid
A Four day course in more advanced first aid at sea. Intended for Junior officers, fishing skippers and engineers.

Medical Care Aboard Ship
(Candidates must hold a Medical First Aid certificate)

One week course, for those in charge of Medical Care onboard, usually Chief Mate, Master, Fishing Skipper Class 1, Master (Yachts). Deals with the principles of diagnostics, care of the patient after first aid has been given, seeking assistance from ashore, drugs and medical supplies.

Medical Care Onboard Ship (Refresher)
A three-day course for holders of the MCOS Certificate, who need to undergo refresher training every five years.

Basic and Advanced Fire Fighting
Delivered for us by Devon Fire Brigade. A 3 day basic course in the principles of Fire Fighting, breathing apparatus etc, which can be then followed by a four day advanced course in command and control of fire fighting teams.

Navigation, Radar and ARPA Simulator (Operational Level)
A four - week course on navigation principles, electronic navigation aids, radar principles and operation, collision prevention. Automatic Radar Plotting Aids, and time on the ship simulator practicing the skills learnt. Designed for junior officers.

Navigation, Radar and ARPA Simulator (Management Level)
A two-week course building on the NARAS (O), to develop skills at a senior officer level, including bridge management, decision making, collision avoidance.

ARPA and Ship simulator
Designed for officers who have qualified at an earlier time, but not been trained in the use of Automatic Radar Plotting Aids. One week, much of which is spent on the simulator.

Small Ships Navigation and Radar
A two week course covering chart work, navigational aids, bridge watch keeping, prevention and collision, radar principles and simulator training. It is suitable for watch keeping officers on smaller coastal vessels, e.g. tugs, coasters, commercial work boats, inshore fishing vessels.
